meetMUSIC: Christoph Spering | Bach Cantatas
"Giving Bach the honour"

With his ensembles Chorus Musicus Köln and Das Neue Orchester, Christoph Spering concentrates on Bach cantatas, the selection of which allows a representative view of Bach's vast cantata cosmos. Spering's interpretations are lively and coherent - which comes into its own in the beautiful atmosphere of the parish church of St. Agatha in Mettingen with its good acoustics.

Spering belongs to the generation of internationally renowned conductors who follow the latest findings of historical performance practice in their interpretations. In recent decades, no other conductor has rediscovered so many important works that had fallen into oblivion and returned them to the musical repertoire as Christoph Spering. As one of the first conductors to do so, he emerged as early as the 1980s with performances of 18th and especially 19th century works in a historically informed performance style, thus treading an innovative path of interpretation.

The recordings of Bach cantatas with Christoph Spering and his ensembles for Sony/Deutsche Harmonia Mundi have been highly praised worldwide. The recording of all Bach's Luther cantatas for the Reformation Year 2017 was awarded an ECHO Klassik.
Already in 2005 he was awarded the honorary title of Church Music Director of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland.
