Luther-Trialog

2017, the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, is being celebrated with numerous cultural events throughout Germany. The Draiflessen Collection has also made the occasion a focus of its programme this year and is drawing attention to and making it possible to directly experience the legacy of the Reformation in three events as a 'trialogue':

The Exhibition
Since 13 April 2017, the Draiflessen Collection has been presenting the cabinet exhibition 1517 in the Liberna study hall, a “legacy” that follows the traces of Martin Luther. The presentation puts a spotlight on the historical events and one of their main protagonists with printed materials connected with the, then, new spirit of the time – from the first printed Bible ('Gutenberg Bible'), which was still written in Latin, to the the 'Mentelin Bible', the first printing of a German Bible prior to Luther’s new translation, to the final version written by Luther, the 'Luther Bible' – as well as with texts, graphics, and other contemporary books on the topic of the Reformation. It simultaneously encourages thinking about the impact that the Reformation continues to have on our life until today.

The Conversation
At the invitation of the Draiflessen Collection, on 26 October 2017, starting at 7:30 p.m., Pastor Oliver Potschien will report on the many stories of people who come to Germany hoping for a better future as well as on the help in their day-to-day life that he and his assistants provide. Father Oliver leads the parish of St. Peter and manages the Petershof, a social-pastoral centre in the troubled district of Marxloh in Duisburg.

The Concert
Christoph Spering, one of the most renowned conductors of early music, along with his ensembles, 'Chorus Musicus Köln' and 'Das Neue Orchester', has taken the anniversary of the Reformation in 2017 as an occasion to make a new recording of all of Johann Sebastian Bach’s so-called Luther Cantatas, which are based on texts and melodies by the reformer. For this, he will be awarded this year’s Echo Klassik prize on 29 October 2017. Just one week later, on 4 November 2017, starting at 7:30 p.m., three of the cantatas, “Nun komm der Heiden Heiland” (Come Now, Saviour of the Heathen), 'Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu Dir' (From Deep Affliction I Cry Out to You), and 'Ach Gott vom Himmel sieh darin' (Oh God, Look Down from Heaven), will be performed under Spering’s direction in the hall at Draiflessen.
