Kasper König ... Face-to-Face with Images

Kasper König remains fresh in the minds of many as the artistic director of the 2017 edition of the Skulptur Projekte Münster, a project he co-founded in 1977 at the invitation of Klaus Bußmann, the former director of the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur in Münster. Kasper König’s past positions have included Professor of Art and the Public at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf and a professorship at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Kunst in Frankfurt am Main, where he later served as rector. His many exhibitions in Germany and abroad have paved the way for new ways of looking at art. Kasper König and art are linked – and Kasper König has linked art and society.

What many do not know is that he was born in Mettingen. While this is actually reason enough to invite him to the Draiflessen Collection, we are particularly eager to bring him Face-to-Face with Images and talk to him about art. We’re interested in hearing which artworks – and which themes and debates in art – inspire him, drive him, or leave him cold. And, last but not least, we want to know what “zeitgeist” means to him.

Professor Kasper König (born 1943):
Exhibition-maker, whose numerous exhibitions include Claes Oldenburg (1966) and Andy Warhol (1968) at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and Westkunst (1981) in the Messehallen, Cologne. From 1989–2000, he was rector of the Städelschule Frankfurt and the founding director of Portikus; from 2000–2012, he was director of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne; in 2014, he was the head curator for Manifesta 10 in St. Petersburg; and in 2017, he served as artistic director of the Skulptur Projekte Münster.
