Fun at the Museum Drawing Workshop: Seascapes
In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the small Netherlands was a big world power. The ships of the Dutch East India Company ruled the seas. Trade in spices, coffee, and tea generated great wealth. Maritime painting – the painting or drawing of pictures of these ships sailing on the high seas or even in the midst of battle – became very popular in the Netherlands at this time. We’ll look at a few examples of such paintings in the “Seascapes” exhibition and afterwards we’ll make our own pictures of ships at sea.
