According to which criteria and standards do we evaluate those works that repeat, copy and translate already existing "originals" into other media? - is the central question of the exhibition THE ART OF REPITITION. It presents plaster casts, copies of paintings, graphics and architectural models, most of which date from the 19th century and are all reproductions of prominent works of antiquity and the Renaissance. As independent repetitions of their models, they question the role of authenticity, originality, and authorship of an artistic work. Numerous exhibits come from the Lindenau Museum in Altenburg. The collections created by Bernhard August von Lindenau are an impressive example of that practice in which originals and copies were presented together.

The contributions to the catalog by Sarah Kinzel, Susanne Reim, Veronika Tocha, Wolfgang Ullrich, and Eva Winter, which deal with archaeology, cultural studies, art history, and the history of collections, provide a differentiated view of the question posed at the outset and of the mutual relationships between original and copy. They also direct our attention to the connection between reproduction practice and the social impact of art. Is it not precisely through the multiple chains of its repetitions that the meaning of a work can be discerned?
