In this etching, Antonio Tempesta focuses on the moment when the enraged Athena transforms the mortal Arachne. The goddess dominates the center of the image. The mortal, backed into a corner, recognizes and registers in disbelief the punishment imposed on her by the goddess: to live out her future existence as a spider. In the audio play at the listening station, Arachne tells you how this transformation came about.
