Crispijn van de Passe (1564–1637)

In this engraving, Crispijn van de Passe depicted several scenes from the Ariadne myth simultaneously. In the foreground we see the moment when Princess Ariadne explains to her beloved Theseus the importance of the thread she holds in her left hand. This thread offers Theseus the security of finding his way out of the labyrinth safely after his successful battle with the Minotaur. In the center of the labyrinth, very small, Van de Passe showed the battle itself between the Prince of Athens and the monster. You can listen to the entire story, from Ariadne’s perspective, as an audio play at the listening station.
