Renee van Bavel THE MIRROR OF PEACE
The works of Dutch artist Renee van Bavel deal with the core themes of peace, humanity, freedom and democracy. The installation artwork THE MIRROR OF PEACE confronts the viewer with the insight that a life in peace cannot be taken for granted and that we must act consciously in order to maintain peace.
The artist
"Through my work for various memorials and foundations in Germany and the Netherlands, I have met many people for whom the words war and peace have a vivid meaning. These encounters have made me very aware that I live in peace and that this should not be taken for granted. This process has ignited a fire in me to share this 'peace consciousness' with the public. Not by explaining it, but by creating a form that allows people to experience it for themselves. This is THE MIRROR OF PEACE. I intend to set up more versions of THE MIRROR OF PEACE in different countries around the world to create awareness: Peace cannot be taken for granted."
- Renee van Bavel
About the work
THE MIRROR OF PEACE sheds light on a difficult subject in an accessible way. It connects society in all its diversity, regardless of borders, gender, origin, religion, social background and age. It is also a communicative work of art: people facing each other in front of the mirror can talk to each other, regardless of whether they know each other or not.
Anniversary "375 years of the Peace of Westphalia"
THE MIRROR OF PEACE has already been shown as part of the 59th Biennale Arte in Venice as a project by the Draiflessen Collection in collaboration with the artist Renee van Bavel and the Abbazia di San Giorgio Maggiore - Benedicti Claustra Onlus, after which the artwork became part of the museum's collection.
2023 marked the 375th anniversary of the Treaty of Westphalia in Münster and Osnabrück. In this context, THE MIRROR OF PEACE was made accessible to the public in Draiflessen Park.
