Introduction

Welcome to the exhibition “Rooted and Branched.” I’m Jonas Schoster, from the museum education team at the Draiflessen Collection, and I look forward to accompanying you on your tour.

People have deep roots in the world – just like trees do in the soil. Our roots consist of much more than just our personal family history. They grow out of our social and cultural experiences, our thoughts and feelings, and our perspective on the world.

The ancient Greek philosopher Plato already viewed human beings as a kind of upside-down plant that stretches its roots not into the earth but into the sky. In this analogy, the head becomes the root of the human being. Our thoughts help us to anchor ourselves in the world.

The exhibition “Rooted and Branched” attempts to describe the complex structures of roots and branches as a way of perceiving the world. It asks the question: What do rootedness and branching out mean in our lives? Selected perspectives from contemporary art demonstrate how closely we are interwoven with our surroundings, with other people, and with the past – in very different ways.

Diagonal walls crisscross the exhibition space. They create a series of individual rooms of different sizes and shapes. One artistic perspective awaits you in each of these areas. The artists’ spaces connect to each other directly, forming a winding path through the exhibition. Openings in the walls give you glimpses of the other artworks in the exhibition.

I invite you to join me on a journey through the exhibition “Rooted and Branched.” Let it surprise you – with unusual techniques, new perspectives, and perhaps your own personal insights.
