A GARDEN OF FLOWERS
Lilla Tabasso & Crispijn de Passe
The exhibition catalog documents the extraordinary dialogue between two exceptional talents across the centuries: Milanese artist Lilla Tabasso (*1973) draws inspiration from the important botanical work “Hortus Floridus” by Dutch engraver Crispijn de Passe the Younger (1594-1670) from 1614 and creates a garden full of glass flowers.
Based on the book's four chapter beginnings on the seasons, which show rigorously laid out French gardens, Lilla Tabasso translates Crispijn de Passe's detailed plant portraits, captured in 166 masterful copperplate engravings, into hyper-realistic, intensely colored flower sculptures made of Murano glass.
The illustrated catalog illuminates this artistic bridge between nature, biology and love of detail. Two essays and an interview with the artist explain the background and connections between the two works and invite readers to see and understand floral aesthetics in a new way.
