Art in the Evening: Lecture by Prof. Dr. Jasmin Mersmann
as part of the exhibition THE DEVIL
In numerous medieval manuscripts, as well as in panel and wall paintings, we encounter a remarkable phenomenon: the deliberate erasure of depictions of the devil. Whether scratched out, cut up or painted over, these interventions point to a complex pictorial practice in which the devil not only appears as a scratched-out motif, but is also stylised as an iconoclast himself. In her lecture, Jasmin Mersmann sheds light on this fascinating phenomenon.
Jasmin Mersmann has been a professor at the Art History Institute of the Free University of Berlin since 2023. In her research on the intertwining of art and demonology, she deals with topics such as possession, pacts with the devil and magic.
