Who is the Devil?
Welcome to our exhibition THE DEVIL: Myth, Power, Mystery.
We invite you to join us as we explore the fascinating history of the Devil.
The Devil is a mystery. For centuries, he has fascinated and terrified people in equal measure.
In art, we meet him in countless guises – sometimes as an animal, sometimes as a dragon, an angel, or a monster. What is astonishing is that nowhere in the Bible are we told exactly what he looks like.
The very fact that he appears in so many different forms can make it difficult, for us today, to recognise the Devil in pictures. All representations of the Devil nevertheless have one thing in common: they warn us of the constant threat he poses. At the same time, they signal the vanquishing of evil.
This tension between fear of the Devil and his defeat, between power and powerlessness, has made the Devil one of the most fascinating figures in Christian art history. The mystery that surrounds him captivates us to this day.
