Film screening: Maya Deren – Between Dream and Ritual
at Cinema and Kurbelkiste Münster as part of MAGICAL WOMEN

As part of the exhibition MAGICAL WOMEN, the Draiflessen Collection is presenting a film afternoon at Cinema & Kurbelkiste Münster featuring works by avant-garde pioneer Maya Deren. Her films are considered milestones of experimental cinema and revolve around themes such as ritual, the body, and transformation—motifs that also characterize the exhibition.

The main film is Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti (1947–1951, 50 min.), a fascinating documentary about Haitian voodoo rituals that allows viewers to experience the permeability between the physical and spiritual worlds. The program is complemented by three shorter works: At Land (1944), Ritual in Transfigured Time (1946), and The Private Life of a Cat (1947). They lead us into dreamscapes, choreographed rituals, and intimate observations of everyday life – poetic studies of movement, time, and the magic of the visible and invisible.

Location: Cinema & Kurbelkiste Münster,
Warendorfer Str. 45, 48145 Münster
Admission: € 9, reduced € 7,50 (the ticket price includes a visit to the Draiflessen Collection exhibitions during the run of the special exhibition MAGICAL WOMEN)
***Please note: The main film will be shown in English.
