Oosterdijk 15

In 1855, Clemens and August moved their business from the south to the north side of the Oosterdijk. Hermann Gerhard Brenninkmeijer describes this location in his company history called Geschiedenis der firma C&A Brenninkmeijer, written shortly after the turn of the twentieth century. Starting from the corner of Gedempten Pol, it should be the seventh house: Oosterdijk 17. In 1960, when the headquarters in Amsterdam asked the manager of the C&A branch in Sneek about the company's first premises, he also described the location of this building. He presumed that it stood eleven houses to the west of the former land registry office, nearer to the city center, which also places it at Oosterdijk 17. Hermann Gerhard, however, provides another clue, stating that the house borders the alleyway Nieuwebuurtsteeg to the west. Oosterdijk 17 lies to the east of this. Did Hermann Gerhard miscount? The third house from Gedempten Pol is a semi-detached house with two house numbers. If we count not the buildings themselves but the house numbers, then we arrive at the property that borders Nieuwebuurtsteeg to the west: Oosterdijk 15. The municipal population registry of Sneek dispels any remaining doubts that Clemens and August ran their business from these premises from 1855 onward: it lists the brothers as residents of Oosterdijk 15.

Today, the building is home to a branch of a men's apparel company.
