Art in the Evening: Talk
as a part of the exhibition UNFOLDING MEMORIES
Following the curator’s tour, a conversation will take place in the exhibition about the historical photo albums on display. Three experts who have worked extensively with these objects will explore the phenomenon of the family album from different perspectives. Conservator Anna Hoffmann restored the albums in preparation for the exhibition, curator Barbara Segelken analyzed their contents and contexts, and Jens Brockfeld, head of the Draiflessen Collection Archive, oversees their cataloguing and preservation.
Together, the experts will discuss the family album as a medium of remembrance: its history, its widespread use throughout the twentieth century, its distinctive material qualities, and the challenges involved in its preservation. What makes the photo albums from the Draiflessen Collection Archive unique? What do they reveal about cultures of remembrance within families and beyond? How can the stories these albums were intended to preserve be reconstructed? And how do we deal with the gaps, uncertainties, and blind spots that historical sources inevitably leave behind?
The discussion offers different perspectives on the photo albums featured in the exhibition and explores their relevance today: What role do historical albums play in the present, and what can they teach us about the ways we engage with memory?
