Art Afternoon with photo book expert Markus Schaden
as a part of the exhibition UNFOLDING MEMORIES
Photobooks tell stories, preserve memories, and open up new perspectives on the world. They are much more than simple containers for photographs: as carefully designed objects, they combine image, materiality, and narrative form in unique ways. In UNFOLDING MEMORIES, historical photo albums meet contemporary artistic works, some of which adopt or further develop the form of the photobook.
Together with Markus Schaden, cofounder of The PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne and one of the leading experts on the international photobook scene, selected sections of the exhibition will be explored. Through the exhibits, an open conversation will develop about the history and significance of the photobook: How has the medium changed since its beginnings? What makes a photobook a special experience? Which books continue to fascinate collectors today?
The event offers a different perspective on the works presented in the exhibition and invites visitors to discover the photobook as an independent medium situated between archive, artwork, and object of remembrance.
The event is free of charge — only regular museum admission is required.
