Description

The photograph shows an aerial view of Mönckebergstraße in Hamburg in 2022. On the left is the C&A building, which was demolished shortly afterward. It differs significantly in style from the surrounding buildings, which are strongly characterized by the typical North German brick Kontor houses. Vertical pillars made of white marble in combination with dark, horizontal bands structure the building’s clear architectural language. The new building, designed by the Essen-based architect Ric Stiens, was opened in 1965. The eight-part series of photographs of the C&A building in Hamburg was commissioned by the architectural firm Nattler, Stiens’s successor, from the internationally renowned architectural photographer Hans Georg Esch. Further photographs by HGEsch were taken especially for the Draiflessen Collection as part of the TRUE TO SCALE exhibition.
