CLEMENS & AUGUST
24.04.2010 – 25.07.2010
Description
For the first exhibition at the Draiflessen Collection—CLEMENS AND AUGUST: YESTERDAY – TODAY – TOMORROW—Werner Ratering created this group of nine sculptures. It was based on conversations with descendants of the C&A founding fathers, among others, and an examination of the interplay between individual values and social norms.
In order to avoid one-dimensional explanations or judgments, the artist, who passed away in 2017, gave each sculpture a title, contrary to his usual practice. In the exhibition catalogue, he says in conversation with Dr. Alexandra Dern: “And the nice thing is that a sculpture can express a certain ambiguity, a paradoxical relationship. So there are different answers to the questions: Where is the individual and where is community? What is a boundary? Where do I have to set myself apart? Where am I in the community? When does a community give strength and power? And when does a community hinder personal development?” The individual sculptures are titled: Nicht–Zwei (Not–Two), Ursache–Wirkung (Cause–Effect), Alles ist gleichzeitig (Everything Is Simultaneous), Entwicklung des Menschen (Human Development), Notwendiger Raum (Necessary Space), Quellpunkt (Source Point), Alles ist leer (Everything Is Empty), Form und Inhalt (Form and Content), Inwändiger Raum (Inside Room).
