THE FALL OF THE STARS
18.03.2018 – 26.08.2018
Description
Julian Rosefeldt transports viewers into an imaginary future—with sounds of wind, the atmosphere, and a pulsating hum—through his forty-three-minute cinematic interpretation of Joseph Haydn’s work, created for the Ruhrtriennale 2015. From far above, the earth and what man has destroyed, as well as remnants of civilization, are taken into view. At the same time, the eye of the drone, which sees and records everything, creates an oppressive feeling of surveillance. Inhospitable locations—an abandoned film set in the desert of Morocco’s Atlas Mountains as well as the industrial wastelands and architecture of formerly vibrant mining regions—come into view. Here, figures dressed in white protective suits and face masks, reminiscent of people and scientists, move around. As if sleepwalking, following a strange choreography, they take step after step. They wander through droughts until they come together at the center of an amphitheater. This ruin appears like the iris and pupil of the planet, set against the observing eye of the drone. Here, Rosefeldt condenses endings, beginnings, and progress and raises questions of utopia and dystopia.
