ARIADNE’S NAAIKUSSEN
15.10.2023 – 28.04.2024
Description
This case contains a needle open on both sides, called an archer, and five flat rods, known as rollers. These ivory utensils were used for net or fillet work. This technique, which dates back to prehistoric times and belongs to the knitting arts, was employed for instance in the production of clothing, fishing nets, or bird nets. Different rollers were used to knot a net of various mesh sizes, and from the late 1840s, after cheap, machine-made nets had conquered the market, the technique of net-making was carried out almost exclusively in the home, for items of private use. It is in this context that the assortment of utensils, in its case decorated with a straw mosaic, can be placed. Thanks to the expertise of Tabea Vietzke, who is also working on the straw objects in the Ariadne’s Naaikussen collection as part of her dissertation, this case can be attributed to the Ebert company in Ansbach, Bavaria. Three other objects in our collection can be clearly attributed to the Ebert straw mosaic company, and four more probably so. It is not (yet) possible to date Ebert’s straw objects precisely. The company, founded in 1847, can be traced back to 1939.
