Description

A customer appears to have just entered Baroness Amalie von Gemmingen’s original fabric and fashion shop. She has probably rung the bell to announce her visit. Now she is standing in front of an opulent selection of hats, fabrics, ribbons, lace, haberdashery, needlework utensils, and much more, displayed on the expansive counter and stowed away on shelves and in cupboards. A saleswoman is ready to respond to the customer’s wishes and present goods for inspection. The store, a dollhouse from the first quarter of the nineteenth century, dates back to a time before ready-to-wear clothing began its triumphal march, a time when clothes were tailored, often repaired and passed on by tailors or housewives, depending on their financial means. Perhaps there is a spectacular occasion for a new dress? Historical dollhouses like this one are a playful invitation to travel back to a bygone era with stories or a focused look at contemporary testimonies.
