Description
This advertising motif shows Agrippina as a symbol for Cologne, Berolina for Berlin, and Hammonia for Hamburg. C&A had already opened stores in Berlin and Hamburg in 1911 and 1913 respectively. Cologne was to become the company’s third location in Germany on September 13, 1913. Agrippina symbolically asks her two colleagues to join her circle: “Let me be, grant my appeal, the third in your alliance” are the words put in Agrippina’s mouth. Each of the ladies wears the C&A department store of “her” city on her arm. The city coats of arms under the company logo complete the historical frame of reference.
The text below the ad draws the attention of Dutch readers to the opening of the department store in Cologne and comments that it has already received exceedingly positive reviews from experts. The motif was designed in the office of the advertising specialist Kurt Lisser (1881–1936), who had been under contract to the company since C&A’s market entry in Germany.
