Description

C&A rented the premises in the building De Zon (The Sun) for men’s and children’s clothing at the address Nieuwendijk 192 in Amsterdam, which was highly frequented at the time, in 1906. The building was located opposite a women’s clothing store already run by C&A. The photograph shows a spacious sales area with a sweeping staircase flanked by two coats on busts. Of all the garments, it was coats that were first offered in ready-made formthat is, prefabricated according to standard measurementsbecause they allowed the most leeway in terms of individual body measurements.

Upon enlarging the photograph, the following lettering is discernible in the middle of the picture, between the top two steps: “Verkoop uitsluitend à con[tant]” (Sale against cash payment only). The sale of goods on credit was quite common in trade. This unmistakable notice in the De Zon store leaves no doubt that the change in payment conditions was taken seriously in the city of Amsterdam.

The three palm trees in flower pots add an exotic flair to the otherwise soberly furnished salesroom.
