Description

This tall wooden clothes rack was probably used to display coats in the Dutch C&A department store in Nijmegen. It stands on castors and is accessible from both sides; and the metal rods for hanging can be pulled out on the left. A metal plate dates the object to 1929. This clothes rack is one of the oldest items of furniture in our collection that originates from the early C&A department stores.
One of the last pages of Hermann Kohlmann’s 1932 publication about the architect Sepp Kaiser, who worked as C&A’s “house architect” from 1916, advertises pure metal racks. These lighter, more flexible, and presumably more cost-effective means of presentation went on to gradually conquer the salesroom, which can be clearly seen in the numerous interior photographs of C&A stores.
