Description

The reddish stone, consisting of quartz, clay, and lime, was carved in a Franconian quarry in the late Middle Ages and then became a part of the medieval vaulted cellar of the Hospitalbrauhaus on the Zeil in Frankfurt am Main. The later C&A logo and the year 1930 refer to its function as the foundation stone of the five-story C&A branch that opened on March 29 of the same year. As part of the demolition of the old store and construction of the new one on the same site in 1987–88, the stone was removed and mounted on a plinth as a symbol of the link between past and present.
