Description

Alongside advertising, C&A’s department stores – as integral parts of the cityscape – particularly inform the collective cultural memory of C&A within our society. Ever since the 1950s, the architectural office of Nattler (originally Gärtner, then Stiens), based in Essen, has been responsible for the design and planning of the approximately 170 C&A department stores in Germany. The over 100 architectural models housed in our archive are valuable both as a research resource and on account of their high aesthetic worth. The present example shows the C&A store on Hamburg’s Mönckebergstrasse, a building with a long and interesting history, and is one of the oldest and most important models in our collection. It documents the store’s stylistically influential remodelling around 1965, which was followed by further, smaller remodelling measures. Since the Mönckebergstrasse store was recently demolished, such models rank alongside photographs as key witnesses to the architectural history of C&A buildings.
