Numerous wooden clothes hangers dating from the early years of the 20th century have come down to us from the different branches of C&A in the Netherlands and Germany. This makes the hangers some of the oldest surviving objects in our Company collection. They come in a range of designs – with or without a bar, with a wooden neck sleeve or sleeveless, and printed with various promotional information. In the case of the present hanger, for example, the spelling of “C&A Brenninkmeyer” with a “y” on one side, in conjunction with the list of further C&A stores and their locations on the other, allow us to date the object with relative accuracy to the years 1930 to 1931. The store in Wuppertal Barmen was opened in September 1930.
