Description

The Schedelsche Weltchronik, better known in English as the Nuremberg Chronicle, marks a pinnacle of book illustration in the incunabula period, i.e. the years between 1450 and 1500 when printing was still in its infancy (Lat. incunabula, cradle, swaddling cloth). It was compiled by Hartmann Schedel (1440–1514), a physician and humanist from Nuremberg, and contains 1,809 woodcut illustrations. Manuscript layouts of the 600 pages were produced in close collaboration with the artists Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. The book was financed by Sebald Schreyer and Sebastian Kammermeister and printed by Anton Koberger. In terms of content and structure, it is divided into seven ages and gives an account of world history based on the Bible as well as on secular sources. It is famous above all for its impressive woodcuts, which include true-to-life cityscapes. With its innovative, harmonious combination of text and image, the Nuremberg Chronicle is considered a pioneering example of modern book design.
