Description
The Gutenberg Bible was the first book printed with movable type. It was produced between 1452 and 1456 by Johannes Gutenberg (around 1400–1468) and Johannes Fust (around 1400–1466) in Mainz. Some 180 copies were printed, the majority on paper. The type and layout were based on the book hand and design of manuscripts of the day. The Gutenberg Bible is also known as the “B42”, owing to its typesetting in two columns of 42 lines each. In order to create these justified blocks of text, Gutenberg used different sizes of type, ligatures (fusions of multiple letters) and abbreviations. The exact details of the planning and production of the Gutenberg Bible are not known. There is evidence to suggest that printing was completed in August 1456 and that copies of the Bible were being ordered and sold on commission even before they had left the press. Since 1955 the Liberna Collection has housed a single sheet from Volume II of the incomplete Mons–Trier II copy of the Gutenberg Bible.
