THE BEAUTY OF PRECISION
13.10.2012 – 13.01.2013
Description
A psalter – the Book of Psalms from the Bible – contains 150 poetic texts in Latin, translated from the original Hebrew. The Sigmaringen Psalter housed in the Liberna Collection belongs to a group of sumptuous manuscripts produced in the first half of the 13th century in the Upper Alsace or Rhineland. During this period, noble families for the first time commissioned manuscripts for their personal use. The present psalter, too, exhibits no signs of monastic usage and was intended for private devotion. The calendar page at the start of the book, which might have provided valuable clues to the owner, is unfortunately missing, as is the cycle of full-page miniatures. The Sigmaringen Psalter derives its name from its provenance: it was formerly part of the Court Library at Sigmaringen and belonged to Prince Karl Anton of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (1811–1885), Minister-President of Prussia.
