Description

In 1599 this exquisite prayer book was a very special wedding gift for Isabella Clara Eugenia (1566-1633), daughter of King Philip II of Spain and Governor of the Southern Netherlands. Joanna de Penin, abbess of the Marian abbey of La Cambre in Brussels, where Isabella Clara Eugenia had spent some time prior to her marriage to Archduke Albert of Habsburg in 1598, herself wrote out its prayers in Latin. These comprise an introductory prayer and seven Salve Regina (“Hail, Queen”) prayers. The accompanying miniatures copy the Salve Regina series of prints at that time newly published by the well-known Antwerp engraver Anton Wierix. Executed in vibrant colours, they were hand-painted by the nuns.
