CLEMENS & AUGUST
24.04.2010 – 25.07.2010
Description
Alongside documents relating to the history of the company, traces of the private lives of C&A’s two founders are also found in the archives. In this small book of some 200 pages, Clemens and August wrote down their personal and family expenses. Clemens started on the first page and August turned the book upside down to make his first entry on the last page. The money is spent on clothing items such as shoes, hats and buttons. Not all things have to be bought new. Thus we find amounts paid for repairing watches, sharpening knives and mending shoes. Leisure expenses include the cost of visits to fun fairs and, on one occasion, admission to the zoo. Clothing, toys and school materials are purchased for the children. In addition to the volume shown here, the archive houses two further expense books kept by the brothers, covering the period from 1841 to 1858 and from 1868 to 1875.
