Description
The Brenninkhof, which stands on what is today Ibbenbürener Strasse in the Wiehe district of Mettingen, is the ancestral homestead of the Brenninkmeijer family. The chronicle of the Brenninkhof’s history has been compiled on the basis of deeds preserved in what are now the North Rhine-Westphalia State Archives. These are discovered in the mid-1930s by Paul Casser (1904–1979), in the course of his research on itinerant traders from northern Westphalia. As from the mid-1960s, former C&A employee Willem J. Blaisse and historian Hendrikus J. Dekkers begin compiling an internal account of the history of C&A and the Brenninkmeijer family, likewise based on these documents. The present chronicle, which combines excerpts from the deeds with a drawing of the Brenninkhof, is produced around 1974. The first appearance of a person bearing the name of Brenninkmeyer is documented in a deed of enfeoffment dated 5 October 1600. He is Johann to Twee genannt Brenninckmeyer then Brenninckhove.
