Description
This perspective view of Rotterdam extends across four sheets. The panorama is seen from the southeast, looking across the Meuse to the city beyond. The river, its waters plied by various merchant vessels and warships, thereby occupies the entire foreground and part of the middle ground – in other words, very much the large part of the representation. The city runs in a wide arc from the left-hand third of the engraving to the lower edge of the far right-hand sheet. Within its long line of buildings, prominent works of architecture can be identified and are also labelled: Engelse Kerck (English Church), Hooft Poort (Main Gate), S. Laurents Kerck (St Lawrence’s Church), 't Stadt huÿs (Town Hall), 't Gast huÿs (Hospital) and de Oost Poort (East Gate). The engraving shows the cityscape after 1645, as evidenced by St Lawrence’s church tower in the heart of the city. The city’s coat of arms appears centrally in the sky overhead, with a banderole underneath bearing the title: “ROTTERDAM”.
