Our archives contain not only a great many adverts in their published form, but in some cases, too, the original drawings, various drafts and printed proofs that go with them. We have received an extensive bequest, for example, from the heirs of the successful commercial artist Ans van Emden/van der Sterren. Ans was active for C&A chiefly in the 1970s to 1980s. She designed adverts for the company’s Dutch and British markets, with a particular focus upon children’s clothing, for which she sometimes used her own young family as models. Looking at her pen and watercolour drawings, we are immediately astonished by their haptic effect – it is as if we can “feel” the fabrics with our eyes.
