FAMILY BUSINESSES AS A PHENOMENON
11.07.2016 – 29.01.2017
Description
Three gentlemen in suits portrayed in full-body are grouped around a wooden table on which are spread documents that seem to be the subject of the discussion. They are Willy (III), Bernard and Alphons (III) Brenninkmeijer (from right to left), who are in the boardroom at Hereford House in London. Based on other portrait paintings and numerous photos in our archive it is quite easy to identify the gentlemen, who established C&A in Great Britain in 1922. In the background there is a fireplace; on the upper part of the wall, a bas-relief is visible. It is made of massive bronze and shows scenes from the life of the company’s founders, Clemens and August. It, too, is in our collection. The artist is the Scottish painter Herbert James Gunn (1893–1964), who, in the 1940s and 1950s, also painted the portraits of members of the British royal family and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1963 in recognition of this.
