Description
This painting shows a classic representation of the crucified Christ flanked by Mary and John the Evangelist. Max Friedländer attributes the panel to the Master of Hoogstraeten. This anonymous painter is said to have been active in Antwerp around 1500. His style of painting corresponds to that of the Antwerp mannerists. He owes his Notname to the polyptych Our Lady of the Seven Dolours, which was located in the Church of St. Catherine in Hoogstraten.
Little is known about this painter. Thus, for instance, a certain influence from the northern Netherlands can be discerned in his painting. This leads one to assume that he might have been a painter from that region who emigrated to the south in order to work there. Another assumption is that he could have been a student of Hans Memling (ca. 1430/40-1494) in Antwerp, and what is more, influences by Gerard David (ca. 1450/60-1523) and Hugo van der Goes (ca. 1440–1482/83) may be detected in his work.
