Prologue

Welcome to the audio guide of the special exhibition THREADS.

Three large-scale etchings by Rosemarie Trockel await you at the foot of the stairs, introducing the exhibition. With their intertwined, crisscrossed, and knotted blue lines or abstracted threads, these works reference the textile art that catapulted the artist to fame starting in the mid-1980s.

Demonstrating the formal kinship between lines and threads, the etchings form a prelude not only to THREADS as the main special exhibition, which focuses on the symbolic meanings of thread for human beings and for our lives, but also to two concurrent showcase exhibitions: STORYTELLING in the Liberna Study Hall and ARIADNE’S NAAIKUSSEN in the DAS Forum. These two shows highlight the narrative power of lines in early prints, and present the historical needlework utensils used to create works of art with thread.
