Introduction
Welcome to the special exhibition THREADS.
In our daily lives, we use threads for a wide variety of purposes. We knot them, sew, weave, embroider, knit . . . In common parlance, we use them figuratively, for example when we speak of the thread of life, the guiding thread, or the silken thread from which something hangs. We also encounter threads in myths and in art, where they take on a variety of meanings. This exhibition focuses on the symbolic power of threads in human life. Using three ancient myths as points of departure, we have arranged three thematic areas in succession:
First: The Weaving Contest between Arachne and Athena, or: Between the Poles of Individuality and Collectivity, Power and Powerlessness
Second: The Thread of Life Held by the Moirai, or: Between Fate and Responsibility
And third: Ariadne’s Thread, or: Between Doubt and Certainty
In each section, an audio play narrates the corresponding myth, taking you back to the world of antiquity. Prints and drawings illustrate scenes from the myths focusing on the meaning of thread. Selected works of contemporary art transport aspects of the myths into our present moment.
The exhibition invites visitors to engage with the open-endedness and versatility of threads, and to interweave them with myths, contemporary art, and their own personal thoughts and experiences.
