Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010)

Simultaneously tentative and aggressive, Louise Bourgeois’s Spider carries three marble eggs under her belly. The spider played an important role for the artist, who drew heavily on her own biography in her work. It represents her mother, with whom she was very close, while her relationship with her father was troubled. Bourgeois herself phrased it like this: “The Spider is an ode to my mother. She was my best friend. Like a spider, my mother was a weaver. Like spiders, my mother was very clever. [S]piders are helpful and protective, just like my mother.”
