Magdalena Abakanowicz (1930–2017)
A group of fifty-one backs, created by Magdalena Abakanowicz. Threads, woven into burlap, solidified in synthetic resin. All are naked, all hunched forward. The heads are missing, arms and legs are only hinted at, the hollow torsos have no chests. The posture of each individual figure and thus of the entire collective prompts the viewer to explore questions of presence and absence, dignity and fragility, power and powerlessness, empowerment and its limits.
