Ariadne’s Thread, or: Between Doubt and Certainty

The myth of Ariadne is a heroic tale and a love story from Greek mythology. Ariadne, daughter of King Minos of Crete, fell in love with Theseus, the prince of Athens. With a ball of thread, she helped him achieve his greatest feat: the killing of the Minotaur, a hybrid of man and bull. In a figurative sense, we still use the term Ariadne’s thread or guiding thread, also known in parts of Europe as the red thread, in everyday speech to this day. Here it serves as a guideline, providing orientation for decisions involving doubt. It gives security. “Doubt and Certainty” is thus the title of the third thematic section of the exhibition.
