Introduction LANGUAGE/TEXT/IMAGE
Welcome to Draiflessen!
From October 2024 to May 2025, the Draiflessen Collection will focus on the theme of language through its three exhibitions: “Sprache/Text/Bild” (Language/Text/Image), “Im Anfang war das Wort” (In the Beginning Was the Word) and “Cunda, Knös und Knaspelhutsche”.
I look forward to guiding you through the exhibition “Language/Text/Image” for the next half hour on this audio guide.
The exhibition presents the works of thirteen artists, male and female, who explore the topics of language, text and image in manyfold and varied ways. These topics are omnipresent in our everyday lives. Through various media, they convey messages about how we should (or shouldn’t) behave. Yet one aspect that is often ignored is how much language, text and image can shape group affiliations while simultaneously excluding others or anything that deviates from the norm.
The artworks chosen for this exhibition highlight the fact that language, text and image are far from neutral categories. They reveal how these terms can be used and manipulated to serve different agendas. The artists address these processes: they examine how stories are told. In doing so, they use learned and familiar patterns while at the same time offering us fresh perspectives. They create space for a range of emotions, moments of doubt and instances of misunderstanding.
