Description

Crafted as a diagonal- or bias-cut strap dress, this black silk crepe evening gown is striking in its casual simplicity and sophistication. It can be pulled on over the head, flows around the body and allows for maximum freedom of movement. It is attributed to the Paris couturier Madeleine Vionnet (1876–1975). This fashion designer, whom many consider the master of cutting, perfected the bias cut, where a fabric is used diagonally to the straight line of the weave. To achieve this, she had fabrics custom made in larger widths. She would first drape the models three-dimensionally on a wooden mannequin and then obtained the perfection that was typical of her by adjusting the soft drape of the diagonal fabric to the body of the wearer by means of an “invisible” network of shaping seams. She eschewed the corset. To this day, a large number of fashion designers in haute couture and in the clothing industry are influenced by Vionnet.
