Description

In 1939 the well-known Dutch stained-glass artist Joep Nicolas (1897–1972) created ten, in part large stained-glass windows for the new C&A building in Utrecht. After the store was closed, the windows entered our Company collection – a real stroke of luck, considering that most stained glass falls victim to damage and destruction. What is special about these windows is that they were originally only accessible to the C&A workforce. The window shown here was paid for by the staff and presented to the management as a token of mutual esteem, as the inscription informs us. For this reason, and due also to its historical stained-glass technique in grisaille with silver yellow, it takes up the tradition of stained-glass window endowments common around 1500. The motif of Adam and Eve holding up a tailor’s coat of arms, and the accompanying verse in the banderole, refer directly to the clothing company.
