The advertisements in our collection document C&A’s marketing activities from its beginnings in the 19th century in the Netherlands to the present day. Advertisements placed by C&A Deutschland, spanning the period from the opening of the first C&A branch in Berlin in 1911 to the year 2002, thereby form a particularly important strand of our holdings. The original drawings for these adverts are also preserved and represent another special feature of the collection.
C&A film commercials were produced for the German market from the mid-1930s onwards and in the early years were screened in cinemas. Our film holdings also include German TV adverts as from 1959, together with Dutch commercials from the 1960s onwards and cinema and TV adverts made for other countries, including the UK and Brazil. Advertising figures still popular today, such as Schnupperhund the sniffer dog and Palomino the horse, are also represented and together with numerous other promotional items enliven our collection.
